Adoption clinics showcase pets
GEORGETOWN — for some, a visit to the Delaware SPCA can be a difficult trip. Folks get emotional and have told employees that it’s just too hard to see all the animals in their kennels.
As a result, Lisa Caputo, shelter supervisor, says they started having satellite adoption services, called Adoption Clinics over two years ago.
“Some people are just afraid to come to the shelter,” she said. “Plus the dogs act different when out of their kennels. the are more relaxed and it’s a good way to meet them.”
The clinics are held at various locations including businesses, banks and pet stores.
Kate Hungerford, volunteer coordinator for the SPCA, said not only is it for those hesitant to visit the shelter but some folks have never heard of the low-kill shelter.
“It seems kind of strange but some people don’t know the shelter exist,” she said. “It’s also a way to showcase the wonderful animals we do have.”
One of the places that hosts the clinics is Concord Pets in Rehoboth Beach. Manager Marie Tigani said over the past 10 years of working with the SPCA, she has seen many animals find new homes.
“The community loves it,” she said. “This year we are trying to have one at least once a month.”
The clinics are mostly run by volunteers and Caputo said they depend greatly on the volunteers. while folks in the community get to meet animals from the shelter, Caputo says it also inspires some to start volunteering at the SPCA.
“It gets them interested and they may decide to volunteer,” she said.
Volunteers take around 10 animals from the shelter including dogs and cats to these clinics. Not only do they benefit from a little time away from the shelter but meeting folks in the community can help get them adopted.
“I’d say about half of the animals at the clinic will be adopted,” Caputo said. “There’s a really good chance sometimes that someone may not be looking and just sees a great dog. They may not be looking and they just fall in love.”
