Homemade dog food for a dog with allergies.? | Pet Source USA Blog

My 9 month old German Shepherd has some type of food allergy. our vet doesn’t know yet what he’s allergic to, but he put Zeus on hypoallergenic food and his itching has stopped almost completely! It’s awesome! (Very expensive food though. . . $80 for a 26 Lb. bag). So, I can only assume at this stage that whatever was in his dry dog food (which is probably in most foods) is what he’s allergic to. I figure if I make his food myself, it will be much better for him. I’ve searched all over the internet for recipes, but most of them, you have to pay for. I need some good, healthy ones. also, many recipes called for supplements. . . is that necessary, and if so, what kind of supplements would he need to take? I also saw a lot with bone meal. . . what is that, and is that necessary also? I don’t want to deprive him of the nutrition he needs, especially since he’s only a puppy and is still growing. please help! Specific recipes would be best. . . like 1 cup ground chicken. . . etc.

I feed home made and my dogs (senior greyhounds and a puppy) are thriving on it. I bought a book I first started reading in my vet’s office called ‘Dr. Pitcairn’s complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats’. It’s got a lot of recipes in it, all the supplements you need and why you need each one, as well as a section on health problems – one of the things covered is allergies.
If you want to feed home-made, I think this book is a great investment, not only for the recipes, but because it explains everything and you won’t need to worry about not feeding your dog a balanced diet.

There was a time when my dog couldn’t stop scratching his coat and nibbling at his paws. I was told by the vet that it was due to food allergies as well and he put me on a ridiculously expensive vet food that cost about 40 dollars for a small sized bag.
If you do cook for your dog, you need to be very careful, as what tastes good to you and I doesn’t necessarily mean healthy and nutritious for the pet.
The following sites have okay articles you can read up on if you are considering cooking for the dog. This came about during the big dog food epidemic some time back.
